Welcome to atlantikwall-denmark.net
After the campaigns in Western Europe the Wehrmacht faced a problem. Now 5000 kilometers coastline had to be secured against potential attacks. Ever since the start of the campaign against Russia in 1941 no larger troop contingents were available to guard the coast.
Therefore it was decided to strengthen the coastal protection with fortifications. In the following years, the European Atlantic Coast, from Norway to the Spanish border, became a huge fortress: the Atlantikwall, a chain of thousands of bunkers, which were meant to stop an Allied invasion.
1800 larger as well as countless smaller bunkers were constructed in Denmark alone.
Many of them can still be found in the dunes of the West Coast. Others were washed down on the beaches by the storm surges of the last decades, were they slowly disappear in the sands.
